I have been around for a while. I have lived in neighborhoods where there were people charging for what was essentially storage space inside of a wooden shed, as well as typical corrugated steel and concrete storage facilities. They both seemed sturdy, and they both had locks provided by the renters.

I have seen high rise storage buildings that resembled loft apartments more so than they did storage facilities. I was amused by this, and also wondered how much trouble it would be to get all of my stuff inside of the high rise unit. Even if they did have an industrial elevator to carry it up ten stories, how am I supposed to get it all the way down the hall? I have never asked but I reckon a forklift might be in order for the job. If I had to carry it myself, I might have to opt for one of the ground level, drive right up to the door and stick it in type storage units, as it would be a lot easier.

Storage has many uses in our country, from old family heirlooms to business documentation and vehicles. No matter your storage need or desire, there are professional and courteous individuals out there who can assist you in finding the right storage at the right price for you.

There are as many different types of storage solutions as there are items that need to be stored. Household storage is needed by tens of thousands of families every year to contain the extra and unused items that are crowding up their homes. Business records need storage, and it needs to be in an area with low humidity so that the papers will not attract mildew, but it also needs to be free of moths that could damage it.

Wine storage must take into account not only the temperature and humidity, but also the immobilization and angle of the bottles and the available light sources, as wine is best stored horizontally in a cool, dark room, undisturbed for long periods of time.

Boat storage is on the rise as more water enthusiasts are purchasing boats for fishing, diving and leisure activities.  Car storage is a must if you are a collector but do not have enough space in your garage to store your prized autos.

And then there is RV storage, which has got to be big and very, very secure. Some of these RV storage companies utilize motion detecting security alarms and other high tech features to insure that nobody tampers with or otherwise bothers the stored recreational vehicles.

It is evident that the storage industry has its hands full when trying to accommodate all of the different needs for storage facilities.

When storing furniture, it is important to keep in mind various factors, such as the age of the furniture. Antique and precious furniture should always be stored in a climate and humidity controlled facility, to preserve the integrity of the wood. It should also be padded, to avoid scratching of the legs and table tops, and covered with dust cloths before closing up the unit.

Furniture storage should also take into account the type of furniture being stored, such as mattresses and box springs. Storage is easiest if you put mattresses and box springs into specially made airtight zippered bags. this keeps insects and mold and mildew from ruining them.  Laying the mattresses and box springs flat could allow moisture to be trapped underneath, so you should always store mattresses and box springs up against a wall, rather than flat.

Using proper padding is imperative to prevent nicks, scratches and dents from occurring.  sometimes the contents of a storage unit can settle, causing unforeseen accidents and damage if the furniture is not properly covered.

Safe storage is entirely possible. It just requires a little bit of foresight and planning. Using bubble wrapping, soft, thick cloths and as much padding as needed will insure that your furniture storage experience does not leave you disappointed.

I know that owning a boat is a pretty expensive hobby. Not only do you have the cost of the boat itself, but you also have to purchase a trailer to tow it with, as well as maintain the mechanical functioning of the water craft. If you are boating through a lake and you hit a snag, or a big piece of wood sticking up, that can cause major damage. That sort of thing comes upon you before you even have a chance to react.

And then, there is boat storage, which, if you do not have a big enough garage, can cost you varying amounts per month or per year. One of the most interesting ways that people store their boat is through facilities that wrap the boats up like a giant sandwich, sealing them in heavy grade plastic. I would actually like to watch that process. i think it would be interesting to see. But that is just the beginning of this unique boat storage method. You see, after the boat has been thoroughly wrapped, it is lifted, via large forklift, up onto specifically designed metal racks, possibly as high as 25 to 30 feet in the air, and hung on the wall like a big bulky plastic picture, or placed inside of a shelf like a big loaf of bread.

Walking into a warehouse full or racks and racks or boats, all wrapped up like big burritos, would be somehing that I have never done.

College students are often strapped for cash. Most of them do not work full time jobs, and their student financial aid may assist with some of their bills, but certainly not all of them. Living in the dorm can be stressful and almost as expensive as renting an apartment.

When summer comes around, the dorms empty out and many college students just throw stuff away because they do not want to have to lug it all around with them all summer. This seems very wasteful, although the neighborhood residents really enjoy going through all of the perfectly usable items such as electronics, shelving, furniture and other things that are in great condition.

It seems like using a storage facility would be a great idea and it would save money in the long run. Putting your things in cheap storage for the summer would keep you from having to waste even more money buying all new things for your dorm room the following year.

We do live in a wasteful society, it seems. Anything that we can do to avoid blatantly wasting and frivolously spending will be in the best interests of all involved. Storage can be very inexpensive, especially smaller units. We are talking just ten to twenty bucks a month for a space that is large enough for you to store small furniture and plenty of boxes

Learning to be frugal when you are in college will take you a long way towards being able to support yourself beyond your education.

There are different methods when it comes to boat storage. Each winter, tens of thousands of boating enthusiasts across the United States have to make the decision about what to do with their boat during the cold, winter off season. Face it, most people do not have the garage space to house their boat. Marina boat storage is very costly, and many recreational boaters simply cannot afford year round marina access.

Many people choose to use the side of their house as a boat storage location, throwing a tarp over their watercraft and hoping for the best. However, raccoons, squirrels and other animals can still get up underneath the tarp looking for warmth and shelter, and the boat is still accessible to would be vandals. Choosing to store your watercraft in a tried and true boat storage facility is probably the best out of all of the storage solutions. True, there is a monthly storage fee involved, but at least you will know that your boat will be stored inside, and out of the elements. Many of these storage facilities use a giant shrink wrapping machine to wrap your boat in plastic, further sealing it for the winter.  While there are some outdoor storage facilities for boats, they usually are covered, at least and the boats are wrapped  or covered with a tarp.

After spending so much money on a boat, people are likely to go the extra mile and be sure that their investment is secured and stored properly for the winter.

There are a ton of car collectors in the United States now. They lovingly restore not only their own oldies but goodies, but they also buy fixer uppers and re-do them to custom proportions and purchase mint condition vehicles for their collections, too. Some of these car collectors may utilize warehouse self storage for their pricey collections, while other collectors may use the services of a bona fide car storage place.

Many of these unique storage solutions not only store your prized vehicles, but they also maintain their security and even their mechanical functioning. Often, these companies will drive the vehicle once a month, per your request, in order to keep the mechanics of the vehicle operational, rather than sitting for long periods. When a car sits for too long, the internal mechanics begin to show signs of decay from non use. These car storage professionals know what it takes to take care of you and your cars, and they go all out when it comes to providing quality service.

Whether your pride and joy is a little, red 1966 corvette, a  sparkling white 1972 Impala or a bright yellow 1975 Fiat, you want to insure that your vehicles remain in peak running condition and that they are not exposed to the elements such as extreme temperatures, rain, wind, hail and snow. Car storage can help.

Moving is a difficult and tiring endeavor, and though most of us do not have to experience it very often, we all, at some point, have to go through the motions of sorting through all of our belongings, buying and taping storage boxes, packing all of our things safely away and then enlisting the help of others to complete the job. Now, it is possible that for the price of a twelve pack of beer we may be able to rally a few well muscled friends together one night and rock out the job of loading and unloading the moving truck.

However, not everyone has friends that might be available for such a task. And if they do know people like that, they may not feel comfortable asking for their help. After all, beer and you Aunt Betty's antique china hutch may not mesh too well.
These people may benefit from calling or going online and obtaining a quote for moving services. While they are more expensive than a twelve pack of beer, moving companies pride themselves on doing professional work, and getting your household items safely from one place to another. They do all of the loading and unloading of the moving truck. All you have to do is pack and unpack the boxes.

You do not have to go very far in this world, no matter what neighborhood you live in, to find local self storage in your area.  Just a quick drive around town will uncover many storage facilities that may have always been there, but you just never happened to notice them before. Perhaps they are located behind your favorite restaurant or next to a gas station that you frequent. The other day I saw one that was built into a hill and was only visible from the front. Chances are that an evening drive will enable you to find local self storage that is not only close to home, but is affordable, as well.

For those who do not want to wast the gas to drive around town looking for cheap self storage, there are numerous online directories and search engines that will allow you to surf the Internet for local self storage, no matter what size unit you prefer or what kinds of additional security services that you may need. The Internet really has made all of the difference when it comes to locating a storage company to house your belongings.  It has never been easier to shop, search and compare prices than it is now that we have the Internet in our homes.

I have been designated as a furniture mover for my little brothers upcoming relocation. This concerns me somewhat. You see, when I moved to a new house six months ago, I basically left Boonville and took a few things, pretty much starting over. I did not have any big, bulky couches, or even a washer and dryer. The heaviest thing that I brought with me to Columbia was perhaps a futon, which I was able to move by myself.

This weekend, however, it will be more of a concerted effort to move my brothers big, heavy items such as his humongous leather couches, his and dryer and even a refrigerator. At least he will be renting a moving truck that has a ramp, and a hand truck that will assist us in getting the job done with less back ache involved, hopefully.

I am excited about my brothers move.  He has basically followed me from Boonville to Columbia, and he will be living just a few minutes away from where I live now. That is a good thing, because when I go to New Mexico in October, I plan on getting paid back to help him move by having him take care of my cats while I'm gone.  He does not know that yet, but he soon will.

My little brother is moving next weekend. So it looks like my Labor Day weekend will consist of helping him  move as well as working at my casino job. To make the transition easier, I suggested that he go ahead and start filling boxes up and taking them over to the new place after he gets off of work.

He said that he would, so I am holding him to it...He does get kinda lazy now and then, especially when there is a chore that he is not looking forward to doing.  This reminds me of the way that I feel when it comes to mowing the lawn. But, in my defense, I did spend two and a half hours doing yard work today. Time will tell how much effort my brother has taken to ensure that my busy weekend is not completely taken up by his relocation deadline.

I had the best luck today on Craigs List...I was browsing around and happened upon a post from a girl who had just completed her move and had unpacked her things and begun to settle in. Rather than throwing them out or recycling them, she was trying to give away all of her used moving boxes and supplies. For free!  Ah, it amazes me to no end how the Universe is always helping out.

When it comes to choosing a storage service, there are so many different options that are available that it boggles the mind. The sizes of the units vary from a small closet sized space to a cavernous space that is as big as a three car garage. The size of the space that you choose is dependent upon the amount of items that you intend to house there. If you have a two bedroom house that needs to go in, then it would probably be in your best interests to check out a 10x15 foot space. However, if you would want to store an automobile along with that, then you would best be served to bump up to the next larger size, which would be a 10x20 foot space.  No matter the amount of items that you have, there is a space that is perfectly suited to housing it. With a little research and a few well placed questions to your local facilities manager, you are sure to fine the space that you need at an affordable price. Be sure to obtain renters insurance on your property, just in case. It is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your personal belongings. After all, these items are more than just things, they are memories.

I was in Seattle a couple of months ago, and I probably saw the sun less than a dozen times the entire seven days that I was visiting. It was nearly always overcast outside. The rain is different there than it is here. It has been dripping and puring now for a good fifteen hours or more, and it shows no signs of letting up. In Seattle, however, the rain is misty and soft. No one uses umbrellas, because the rain is so light, you barely even notice it. And watching the storms roll in across the Puget Sound is a beautifully uplifting and even spiritual experience. I would probably relocate to the upper West Coast if I ever had the opportunity. I know for a fact that I will visit Seattle again before too long, because I enjoyed the atmosphere of the city so immensely. Who knows, before too long I may be calling up and pricing out nationwide moving companies in search of the best deal to help me get my things up to the Pacific Northwest. With all that the region has to offer in the way of environmentally friendly and artistically inclined living, I feel like me and my girls would fit right in.

When I think of portable storage, I think of metal sheds that you can build and then tear down and rebuild in another location. I like the idea of my belongings remaining on property with me, even though it is not in the immediate house. I have read about companies that offer such a service. They literally come to your property, and they leave a huge metal box there, for months or years if you want them to. In this way, you have access to your things, the most convenient access that you can have, which is right in your back yard. I have to wonder about zoning laws and regulations that prohibit such things from being located in your yard or on the side of your house. No doubt such restrictions do exist. I would think that the company would be wise to the restrictions and let the customers know ahead of time if the laws prohibited such use on their property. Any reputable company would be privy to that information and would not withhold such things from a potential client just to earn some cash.  I have not seen any local companies that offer this service, so my guess is that such a thing is not allowed here in this area. That is unfortunate. In my opinion, if it is my backyard, and I want to put a big metal box in it, I should be able to do so.

I have several storage containers full of used veggie oil in my garage. Why? Well, because I know someone that has a bus that runs on veggie oil. The oil is used, and it is acquired from local restaurants. There was an abundance of the oil stashed in a shed on another property, which needed to be moved somewhere when the lease to the property was up. Like everything else, it came here, and is now living in my garage. The person who owns the bus is long gone, to New Mexico, and now I have all of this oil that I need to find something to do with. I know someone who knows someone that will buy the oil from me for about three dollars per gallon, which would actually net me about a hundred and twenty bucks or so. I can handle that. The problem is getting in touch with the guy that knows the person who will buy the oil. these things are always made more complicated than they need to be. For now, though, the oil can remain where it is. As long as it doesn't spill, we are in good shape. I would not enjoy cleaning up a mess of vegetable oil. I can imagine the slipping and sliding that would entail...

Storage services are becoming an increasingly popular form or decluttering the average American home. How many boxes of Christmas decorations, old linens, board games that have never been played and electronic equipment does the typical family have tucked away in nooks and crannies of their attics, garages and basements?  Suffice it to say, that we all accumulate things on a regular basis, things that we may not really need, but we take them anyway just in case we may use them pone day. Garage sale shoppers, now they load up. They probably could stand renting a unit just for their thrifty finds. Many times, an opportunity comes that you simply can't pass up. A free couch, an new desk chair, or a vintage dining table or sewing machine shows up, and you just know that you will be able to squeeze it in somewhere. Once you get it home, though, the squeezing is more difficult than you first imagines.  So you have a choice, watch as your house shrinks, or move some of that stuff out to a nearby space where you can access it at any time.  I would rather be able to pick and choose what surrounds me, and keep a spacious open feeling to my home, rotating the contents like food in my pantry, than be squished and stressed in a house that was filled to capacity.

It's a lovely, gloomy and wet afternoon. My yard is like mush, my driveway like a river, and my basement is holding an inch and a half in water in some areas.  Fortunately for me, the part that is retaining water is well away from all of the storage boxes that I have stashed down there.
I had a funny experience this morning. I was in the basement attempting to swoosh all of the water down the drain, and when I was going back upstairs, I looked up at the sliding glass door and burst out laughing. My newly adopted cat, Moo-moo,
(no, I am not responsible for that name...)
was hanging onto the screen door, a foot and a half up in the air. His paws were slayed out like he was stuck to a cliff. And he had the most pathetic, wet look on his face.  He is a very silly feline. that just made my day to see something so funny. If I had had a camera handy, I would have taken a picture and posted it on that blog 'I can has cheezeburger?'  It definitely would have made it with some funny slogan. I can imagine the caption as being something along the lines of ' I iz a door. I not let you thru...' or some such nonsense.

Alright now, this is it, truly and irrefutably the last blog entry that I am going to write tonight. I can go no further. I feel like taking this computer and all of its accessories, shoving them into moving boxes, and shipping them to a place far, far away.  After this, it is quite possible that you will never hear from me again. Okay, so that is not true, but AARRGH! I can't feel my arm!

Regardless of the outcome of this friendly little competition that we have entered into together, I will be satisfied, knowing that I did what I could do to put big smiles onto the faces of my girls, and then I can get back to the business of my life again. So, come what may, once this blog entry is done, I an going to bed. Poo...I think the sun is starting to rise....I guess that means that I will be sleeping with a pillow covering my eyes. But oh, what a restful and lovely sleep it will be. It has been a long day, and while all of you are getting ready to begin yours, I am still coming down from my worknight and my obsessive blogging, and so, to all of my fellow bloggers and cyber friends, may you have a pleasant and joy filled day.

Yesterday I took my teen out to a Thai restaurant nearby. We love the buffet. Plenty of vegetarian options and lots of different flavors and textures make the food simply irresistible. I was full for hours. On the way home, I saw yet another storage company that I had not previously known was there.  This one was tucked away neatly, and I've probably driven past it a hundred times or more without ever realizing that it was there.

It's interesting to stumble across these things, as they catch my eye at the strangest times. And each and every time I pass by one, my mental monkey chatter starts screeching "look! another one! do you believe that?"  They really are everywhere. It's a good thing, too, because so many people use them. I know that if my house was overflowing with stuff that I didn't want to look at anymore, I'd be one of their best clients. Right now, I have plenty of space, and unusual amount of space, in which to keep my things, so I don't worry about it. But every time I go onto Craigslist, I find something else that might look good in my house, like the moon chair that I found the other day, and whatever else that I will find tomorrow. I need to wean myself off of that site.

My backpack is my own little portable storage place. It holds all of my things in perfect order and safety. My newly acquired laptop fits snugly inside, as so the cord that charges it and the mouse that I use with it. With my backpack, I don't need to carry a purse, because it has so many pockets and pouches that it holds just about anything that I can imagine.

It is funny just how much stuff some of us need to carry around in order to feel comfortable. I don't carry too much extraneous stuff, but I do have my necessities, as do all of us. I think it lends to a sense of security, knowing that should anything important come up, we will be prepared. Whether it is carrying an extra pair of contact lenses, or a daily planner, I find that when I have my backpack, I feel more in control somehow. It's weird, but effective. I rarely have to say 'oops, I forgot such and such' because it's all in there!

I've seen girls walking around with purses that you could fit a small man into, and I have to say that if I had something like that, I'd never be able to find a single thing that I was searching for. I need pockets, and little nooks and pen holders.

Working for a moving company has got to be strenuous work, My back hurts just thinking about it. Wait, scratch that, I 'm pretty sure that my back hurts because I have been hunched over this keyboard for hours.  Yeah, that's probably it.  Anyway, I can imagine that, even with hand trucks and other nifty accessories to help make the job easier, that line of work would still be somewhat of a stretch for most people.

Think about it. We may move once every three or four years, and when we do, it is a real chore. Imagine doing that every day, for a living!  Eek.  I give props to the men and women who make it their business to help people during that transition in their lives. I know it is appreciated.  I couldn't have afforded it, personally, six months ago when I moved into this house. What a luxury it would have been for some big strong guys to come and lift all of my boxes and furniture!  I don't plan on moving again just yet. Maybe by the time I am ready to relocate, I will be able to splurge and hire some help. Boy, I sure hope so.

My cats and my kids are all fast asleep, as I soon will be. Pardon me for my delirious ramblings, but right about now, my fingers are numb from typing, my eyes are droopy from lack of sleep and I need some water.  Yet, I persist on this insane quest... I don't usually enter contests, but for some reason, that reason being my daughters, I have taken on the challenge. Now I feel like I am running a marathon, except for the fact that I barely have enough energy to type these words, much less run right now.

I was writing an article the other day about mini self storage, and it was referring to steel as being the most environmentally friendly way to build said units.  I suppose so, but I often wonder why everyone has to put an eco friendly spin on everything? I mean, I guess steel can be melted down and turned into something else, as opposed to concrete just being broken up and dumped onto a huge pile of rock somewhere. I would hope, however, that someone who was interested in starting a business of that kind would find a piece of land that, at the very least, had already been commercialized and built upon, rather than cutting down trees to build it.

Driving down 40 in the middle of the night, I have noticed hundreds of little frogs. I don't know what they are thinking, but as soon as they see my car headlights approaching, they make a bee line right into the road in front of my vehicle. Thankfully there are no other cars driving that road late at night. I must look like I'm drunk, the way I'm swerving all over the road to try and avoid the frogs. I may just have to start taking I70 home at night if it keeps up.

The last really big storm we had, I ended up having to forget about the frogs all together and just hope they got out of my way. I couldn't even see the road, much less the little frogs. That was actually quite a scary ride, fog, pummeling rain, some serious lightning streaks that were so close that I was afraid one of the trees on the side of the road was going to be struck, and then, on top of it all, there was hail! Those poor frogs never had a chance.

I'm always very conscious of critters on my way home, and I really try hard not to hit those poor frogs. Why wont they stay on the side of the road for cryin out loud! Anyway, I'm turning in. I have no doubt that dreams of storage units and frogs will come to me in my sleep.

Man, it's almost 4:30 in the morning. I've really got to go to bed before dawn, otherwise it is more difficult for me to fall asleep. The thing is, writing wakes me up. I know what is going to happen. I'm going to go in there and lay down and have sixty thousand thought racing through my head for an hour or more. I wish I could just trade in my sleep time and get things done. I can be so much more productive, except for that silly sleep thing.

Nevertheless, I do have places to go tomorrow, and I have to work yet again dealing craps tomorrow night, so, going without sleep, even at this late stage (or early stage, depending upon how you look at it) is not an option.  Over the last few months, I have pulled quite a few all nighters, hunched over my computer keyboard, feverishly hammering out blog assignments on local self-storage, or writing these blogs. I'm beginning the process of writing for me again, though, and that feels comfortable. I'm journaling, even writing poetry, and soon, I think I will try my hand at writing a story or two.
2:26 AM Jul. 30, 2008 - 0 comments
Every day I receive these flashes of insight. Thoughts that will shake me up and make me say to myself " Yes! That is what you have been waiting for! Do it now before you forget!"  Just today I experienced a moment of serenity that led to such an epiphany. I stumbled across something online, and all of a sudden, the words 'write stories for your spiritual growth' was in front of me. I thought that was interesting. I went outside for a few moments of solitude and reflection, as I am wont to do, and I realized that one of the reasons that I hesitiate to write stories is because of the fear that I will not be good enough.

Competition for writiers is fierce, I tell you! So many people are so much more experienced, well versed and intuitively creative, that I could not possibly compare to their level of brilliance. So today, I realized a most important fact. I don't have to compare to those people whom I respect and admire so much for the inspiration that they have bestowed upon me. They are in a different place, they lead different lives, and so they come from a completely personal perception of the world around them, as do I.

Like lightning, I was struck by the surety that writing from my perspective, me, and not just to please an audience, is vastly more important in finding my truth and my voice? How will I ever discover the workings of my soul if I am constantly trying to impress an audience of people whom I have never met? I realized that my audience consists of people who are a lot like me.  Right now I write about things like climate controlled storage and it is rapidly turning into something much more beautiful, leading me to a deeper awareness of who I am and what I have to say.

Ruby spent the entire weekend with her Dad.  I miss her so much when she is not here with me. She finally came home Monday afternoon, in time for me to hang with her for a few hours before I had to leave again to go to work at the casino. She was crying when I left, as she often does when I haven't seen her for a few days and then have to go to work.  It is a terrible feeling to want so badly to stay home with her, while she is clinging to me with tears running down her face. She knows that I must go, as do I, but it hurts us both.

As I drove down the street, she literally ran after me, chasing my car. I stopped and gave her a few more kisses before I finally drove away.
Being a mother is hard. I relish every moment of it, but it is more emotionally and financially challenging than any thing else that I have ever done. I try not to let my fears run rampant, obsessing about all of the things that could go wrong. I have faith and trust that the Universe operates in a way that will ultimately serve the highest good of all involved, but that doesn't make it any easier to drive away.  At least when I am home, writing about moving & storage, I can be with her, hug her and talk to her.

Tomorrow (or today to you folks who are asleep right now) I get to babysit two of the most wonderful kids that I know. They play well with my daughter and I, and we always have fun. Sometimes we paint, sometimes we make gooey flubber, and the other day we built a 'structure' out of twigs and electrical tape. And while it is nice to have the extra money, the kids are such a joy to be with that the time goes by fast, and before I know it, it is time for Ruby and I to go.

It makes a difference when you enjoy the work that you do, doesn't it?

My schedule has changed at the casino. Beginning next week, I will only be working three nights per week as opposed to four. It may not sound like much of a difference, but oh, it will be. My nights off will be Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. I am so looking forward to the change. The less often that I work, the more I seem to enjoy the job, the more time I have to spend with my daughters, and of course, the more time that I have to put into writing lovely articles about self storage.

Hey! Guess what! I bought a laptop today!  I'm so excited about it that I have been telling everyone. Granted, it isn't a brand new laptop, but for my purposes, it will work like a dream. I found it on Craigslist (of course). I've been looking for a while, but have been hesitant to buy from an individual out of fear that the computer would die or be faulty, and then where would I be? But lo and behold, I found myself a self professed computer nerd, who absolutely loved this computer for a year. Now, for him, it is time for an upgrade, and he has to let it go.

The beautiful thing is that he completely reformatted the thing for me, reinstalled all of the programs and really hooked me up!  Not only that, but he has generously agreed to be my go to guy if and when I ever have any problems with any of my computers.  So now, I have a computer guy. I did tell him that I will refer business to him as well, so, if anyone needs their computers worked on, I have your solution.

Now that I have this laptop, I won't be having to kick my kids off of the computer all the time in order to write my articles about personal storage. Plus, I can go anywhere in my house, including my lavender meditation and massage room.  Woo Hoo!  All of this for a mere $375. And I couldn't have done it without this company. Thank you, yet again!

My driveway has become a sort of car storage of late. There is a vehicle that has been sitting in it for over a month now, awaiting the return of its owner. It is pulled up just a little closer to my garage than perhaps I would have liked, but there it sits, kind of in the way.
Luckily, I have a large driveway, and it has not prohibited me from parking there. The owner of the vehicle is supposed to be coming back soon to retrieve it. Actually, he was supposed to be back in town today (or yesterday to you folks who actually sleep at night) but I never heard a word from him. Perhaps he will come strolling in tomorrow, but the thing is, he will be bringing yet another vehicle, which will undoubtedly be sitting in my driveway for another month or so.

It's a good thing that I really have a fondness and great appreciation for the individual to whom the vehicles belong, otherwise I might have something to say about the fact that the cars are left here for so long. I guess, on the bright side, it makes my house seem like there is always someone here. I'm always the optimist, aren't I?

I stepped outside for a few minutes to enjoy the storm. The lightning sparks the sky, consuming it, bringing a split second of daylight to the neighborhood, the rain is pummeling everything it touches and the thunder is a fierce rumble, even from where I sit now at my computer. I love storms. They relax me, make me feel at ease. I know many people don't enjoy the rain, but I would much prefer the crisp, clean, cool air that rain brings in to the humid, sweltering heat that we have been receiving here in Missouri lately.

The sound of a heavy thunderstorm such as this one can lull me to sleep faster than any kind of meditation cd of classical music can. What is it about that sound? It is the music of the Earth; Mother Natures symphony clinking and trickling in our ears. We are here on this planet to enjoy and appreciate its many wonders.
This rain storm right now is one of them. It entices me to stop what I am doing and just be with it, letting the sights, sounds and smells overtake my senses, bringing me closer to my center; closer to the divine. It is no wonder that ancient peoples worshipped the rain. In a sense, I do. unfortunatley, I cannot go to sleep right now, because I have few more blogs about selfstorage to attend to.

Yes, friends, it's crunch time. The contest is almost over and I am racing, quickly to the finish line. My kids want a Wii, and by golly, they are going to get one. It is wonderful, really, the things that we will do to make our little guys and gals happy. Not all of it is in their best interests all of the time, of course. My husband and I have been separated for six months now. He still has a very bad habit of giving Ruby, our young daughter, candy, all of the time. He keeps it at his house, gooey milk duds and peppermint patties, and she just eats it constantly. Now, I'm no innocent here, because I have given her enough candy to make any sweet tooth ache, but over the months, I have really cut back. She doesn't get a ring pop every time we go to the store when she is with me. I don't buy sugary cakes and twinkies and all of that gunk and keep it in my house. I just don't want it here.

But, looks like the damage has already been done. Today she went to the dentist for a regular check up, and though six months ago her teeth were ok, now she has three cavities. Sigh. I've tried to ask David to cut back on the candy, not just for the tooth decay aspect, but for the sugar addiction that it fuels. Maybe now he will honor that. I see lots of brushing, flossing and rinsing in Ruby's future, not to mention a new video game system;) I mean really, I could be writing an article about storage rooms right now, but noooo. I'm on this blog again! What can I say? I'm determined.

I have this playlist on my computer. On it, I have downloaded a host of electronica songs. One band in particular really appeals to me. The band is called Ratatat. The music is mellow, yet groovy, and it makes my body sway and my fingers tap. I often listen to Ratatat while I am writing. There are no lyrics, just music that feels like, well, like the break of dawn. It feels like a celebration of sound. Sometimes, I just have to get up and dance to it. It moves me that much! What a great feeling, to be in the middle of writing something, knowing that every word will bring money into our lives, and yet I have the freedom to throw my chair back, jump up and dance to a few songs if I want to.

So many of my moving and storage articles have been composed while I was swaying back and forth to the sounds of synthesizers, congos, clapping, and even a wildcats roar, that I would hesitate to try and count them all. One thing is for certain, though, Ratatat makes me feel alive, in place and ready to take on whatever project or assignment comes my way.

Music is such a moving force in our lives. It heals us, it can anger us, and it can make us cry. No matter what mood I'm in, I can find a song to bring out the emotions. Electronica appeals to me because most of the songs contain no words, and that is easier on my mind than getting wrapped up in someone elses story. There are times when I want and crave another persons soulful words, and times when I just need a background soundtrack to keep me grooving.  I love it!

I wonder what international self storage is like compared to American...Think about it. In Japan, the houses are teeny. An entire apartment is the size of one American bedroom, and yet three people may live there. They even have hotels that are nothing but pods of little beds, barely enough room for you to sit up in. What could their facilities be like? Do they even have them in Japan? People must be used to living with minimal things, yet there are some amazing retail stores fashion designers, and all kinds of electronics stores. Where do they keep all of their things?

Living here in the States, we have become spoiled by the amenities that we have. Our houses are bigger, our trucks and SUVs are bigger, and so is our debt.  I do not own a credit card. I never have. I live from paycheck to paycheck, like millions of Americans, yet I have no substantial debt. No credit card bills, no mortgage, no student loans (but as my daughter is thinking about college, I'm sure that will soon change :) and no car payment. I don't make a lot of money, but then, I don't need a lot of money.

I feel good that, at the very least, I have the debt thing under control. Of course I'm driving a 22 year old car with no air conditioning, but hey, it's paid for. Sure, I'd like to have newer, nicer things, but all the hard work and the debt that goes along with acquiring them really just turns me off. I like simplicity, ease and peace. I don't want to spend 50 hours a week working my tail off just to drive a better car. I feel like we have everything that we need, and as my income grows, which it has thanks to this company, I can use it wisely, or, gasp, even consider saving some of it.

Today I had the pleasure of reading some of my teen daughters writings. We have been homeschooling her for six years or so, and I must say that we are very relaxed in our approach to homeschooling. We prefer calm, unforced learning as opposed to overloaded schoolwork demands and stress. It has always been that way. Over the years she has taught herself a second language, Japanese, and though she is still learning, she can actually hold her own in conversation. I have seen her stun more than one Japanese native with her skills, and I am always proud of her when that happens.

When I got home tonight and read some of her writing, I just had to shake my head and smile. The sentence structure was there. The spelling was perfect, and the grammatical errors were few. She had interesting subject matter, and even the titles were unique. I am so proud of her, because she has taken it upon herself to learn the skills necessary to get her through life. I feel like she has a knack for writing. She may not know it, but she's a natural. Maybe one of these days you will see her work here, gabbing about local self storage.  Stranger things have happened.

Every person has their dreams. What are mine? I'm not so very sure myself. All I know is that I wish to make other people happy, it fulfills me in ways I could never explain. Sure, practicing random acts of kindness in the library, the grocery store, and taking care of my daughters are all fine and good, but at the heart of all that, what do I really want?

I want to inspire people with my writings. I'm a big fan of new age authors like Deepak Chopra, and those who lead you to question everything. They help you find your own answers inside. I don't really need to be one of the movers and shakers, the groundbreaking new talent, I don't want my name to be a buzz word. I just want to know, in my heart of hearts, that some person, somewhere, has had their life touched by my words. I want to know that I've made some body's perception of life better in some small way, at least for a little while.

I wish for this, yet I know it's true: I used to work as a preschool teacher, and during the holidays, the parents of the kids I watched bought me presents. To this day, the one I like most is a white coffee mug, emblazoned with a child's drawing and the quote: "Fifty years from now it will not matter what kind of car you drove, what kind of house you lived in, how much you had in your bank account or what your clothes looked like, but that the world may be a little better place because you were important in the life of a child"

Well, it's finally happening. My intrepid eldest daughter has at last voiced her desire to branch out on her own... out of state! Can you believe that she is only sixteen? The other day she told me her master plan: After their summer camp, she wants to get some kind of job with her best friend, save up enough funds to support them on their own, and then high tail it to Oregon once her friend turns 18, so they can rent a room somewhere. Believe me, I'm scared! It's hard to let my little girl fly the nest, but it's been her fondest desire for years now to live in Oregon. She stayed there with her aunt for a week, and became obsessed. She said that Oregon felt more like home than any place we've ever lived... even our very own CoMo, that she adores!

I think she's responsible enough to actually accomplish all of this. I have my doubts as to how soon those girls will really make this brave move happen, but they're quite determined and I have a hunch they'll figure it out. Around this time next year, I may just be calling up some long distance movers...

Lately, I've been getting into jogging. I've been jogging about three miles every day, for the past four weeks. It's fun and invigorating; I never did anything athletic in my youth but now I can't get enough of that runner's high! I feel much stronger, I notice my muscles are more toned, and it's just nice to take that time for myself in the morning. ...As opposed to focusing all of my energy on odd jobs, or on my two feisty kids!

I have taken a liking to a certain special path near my home, because it has the most interesting scenery. Each day I pull my shoes on, grab my Walkman(what can I say, I'm old fashioned) and jog the few blocks to a lovely public garden. As I run past I take in its beautiful fragrance and peaceful atmosphere, wanting to sit and meditate but pressing on further, past a few elementary schools, cemeteries, a man made lake and an abandoned storage facility. Around there is where I start to get tired, turn around and retrace my steps. My route doesn't come back around, it is a dead end and I prefer it that way. I get two views of the same places, complete my workout, rest in the garden and tread on home, back to face the day.

My youngest daughter has always been into animals, especially kittens. To my surprise, she has become obsessed with The Jetsons. I wasn't even aware that show was still on TV!  But sure enough, my home has become plastered with everything involving the Jetsons, astronauts, astronomy, outer space and the future in general. She's even drawn up creative little pictures of galaxies, space robots, space aliens, space vehicles, space storage, space cuisine... the little designers favorite is space clothes!

Surprised and amused by the similarity of her drawings of 'the future' to mine in the 70's, I've nostalgically taken her interest in the future as an opportunity to tell her about the past. What life was like when I was young and the show came out, what we thought that the world would be like now... do you remember? Fantasies of the future and sci-fi realms from decades ago? Exotic houses in the sky, on the moon, on mars! When I was little, I imagined floating vehicles and rocket shoes being mainstream in 2008. I invited my daughter to tell me her predictions of our future, and what was her reply? "Well, won't all of those cool things happen by 2038?"

I've been branching out, making bold moves and bidding on other writing opportunities lately, and now I'm beginning to get some replies. From naming and describing pieces of silver jewelry to writing about the spiritual and physical characteristics of a healthy relationship, I'm just throwing stuff out there, hoping to rattle loose and release some of the ideas that have been pent up in this big storage unit that is my brain. I'm having such a great time writing that I've decided to go down to working only three nights a week at the casino, in order to give me even more time to write.  It's so awesome!

I'm being stirred from within, and it's healthy. It's building my confidence, my vocabulary skills, and strengthening my writing style. It's reminding me that I have at least one book to write someday, and I'd better get moving if I ever want that day to come. The only downside to all of the writing that I am doing for pay is that it leaves me little to write for myself. I understand that it is always a choice. When it comes to writing, I have made the choice to at least begin it. That counts for something, in my mind.

Today is my day off! I finally got to sleep at six a.m., waking up for the day at 2:30 in the afternoon.  Some people would feel as if their entire day had been wasted if they woke up at 2:30. But, I know that I will no doubt be up until almost dawn again, reading, writing, and probably doing laundry, so I'm not losing any up-time.

This afternoon I journey to the mall to have my hair cut off again. I will also take my little girl along and we will hit up Target to buy all of the cool school supplies for my girls that will last all year long. We love the construction paper, watercolors, glue galore, tons of new markers and pens. Every year we buy a bundle, and then throughout the year, gradually, it dwindles down as markers lose their tops and crayons are broken. Perhaps, while I am there, I should buy some more plastic storage containers, to hold the supplies in until we are ready to use them. I hate to limit them, but it seems so wasteful to open a new box of markers every three weeks. I need a secret stash, something that is not easily accessed, to keep Ruby from digging around in there every day. If she had her way, she'd blow through all of them in two months time.

While I am out, I intend to get one of those big desk calendars. Maybe that will keep me straight!

I still have plenty of storage boxes in my basement that have yet to be unpacked. They contain things that I cherish, but that I don't want to display in my home. My Grandma had a large collection of Precious Moments figurines, and a few Hummels. When she passed away, I was given a box of these pieces as mementos of her. I looked at those figurines for much of my adult life, at the very least. I even bought many of them for her as gifts. I did not anticipate or even think about the day that I would have them in my possession once again. I bought them because they made her happy. Now they sit in a box, neatly wrapped, tucked away with boxes of resting memories of years gone by when life was not as it is now. As much as I loved my Grandmother, I don't want to have her figurines on display in my home. I don't need those little statues to remind me of my Grandma. She is with me every day. She is in my heart and in my head. Always in my thoughts. I'll keep them tucked in boxes nice and snug until...well until the day comes when I have reason to take them out.

My garage is used for everything except my car. In the six months that I have lived in this house, I have never once pulled my car, or any one else's car into the garage. My garage is not so much an auto storage as it is a lawnmower, inflatable canoe, water hose, tool, paint and other miscellaneous item catchall.

I know that it is the middle of the summer, and that it's been up in the high ninety's lately. My car has no ac. I'm thinking it is about time that I clear out my garage so that the car will fit inside. After all, a nice cool shaded car is much more comfortable to get into than the stuffy, sweltering metal oven that my car becomes when it's been sitting in the sun all day. Even with the windshield visor, its hot, hot...I'd try that egg frying experiment, but I don't want to clean up the mess. I know that it would work, though. It practically fries my body every time I have to get into it. Maybe this weekend if I can find an hour or two to spare...really that is all that it would take...I can get in there and do some rearranging. It sure would make starting the car more bearable!

My step father is a fishing enthusiast. His favorite past time is to get out on his boat and get out on the lake. He spends hours at his boat storage just tinkering with, cleaning and reorganizing his boating equipment. It is bordering on obsession, according to my mother, who has been on the boat a total of four times since he acquired it two years ago.

She enjoys going out on the lake every now and then, and even manages to catch and release a few of the finned ones herself, but she is happier to let him go hang out with his fishing buddies and she really doesn't care too much about getting up at three a.m. to get to the fish while they are still biting.

It's a blessing for her that she has that extra, quiet, spacious hour or two of sleep before her husband comes home with a bucket of stinky dead fish to clean. Mom won't do that either. Her motto is...you kill it, you clean it, I'll cook it, we'll eat it. It is cooperation at its finest. And it works out well for each of them. I guess marriage really is a two way street, isn't it?

The answer to my domestic storage solutions can be summed up in one word...baskets. I adore wicker baskets, with cloth liners, without cloth liners, with and without lids, big and small, I just love them.  They hold my socks and they hold my CDs. They contain my spices, and also my daughters bath toys. Baskets hold my laundry, clean and not so clean. They even hold my sponges at the kitchen sink.

My oldest daughter once brought home a handful of those small dinner roll baskets that you find at restaurants. She found them lying on the roadside as she was walking. There were perhaps six of them.  They were brand new, each with a three dollar price tag. She picked them up thinking that I would use them. She knows me so well!

Almost every one of those baskets is in use somewhere in my house right now. Why save them for biscuits when so many other things can be put there? There is probably one of those baskets in almost every room in my home, and they all have something in them.  They may be plastic, rather than wicker, but in some ways, that is even better. Just throw them in the dishwasher when they get too dirty and you are good to go.

I live in a house with no couch. I do not own a truck and so if I were to find large pieces of furniture such as couches, big desks, love seats and the like, I'd probably have to resort to truck rental just to get them to my home. Goodness knows that I can't afford such luxuries as brand new furniture with delivery included! I'm more of a Craigslist type of girl. I've actually found some great things on Craigslist.  My most recent purchase was a cream colored, folding Moon chair. It is like new, and I got it for ten bucks. I'm in the market for a couple of Papasan chairs at the moment. They are easier to move and rearrange than couches. I'm pretty much over the idea of having a normally furnished house as it is. We have all kinds of chairs, though most of them are not soft and mushy.  I'm looking forward to the marshmallowy-ness of big, stuffed papasan chairs. If you know anyone who's selling.....let me know!

Finding new uses for interesting pieces of furniture is more affordable, and unique than buying a whole room full of stuff in one fell swoop. I like to acquire my things gradually. It is eclectic, doesn't match, necessarily, and not really glamorous, but it works for me. Besides, with young children and cats jumping all over it all of the time, it wouldn't last long anyway.

I like to have my own space. I need it. I crave it. We all do. Think of a teenager who has to share a room with her younger brother, or a college student who is going crazy because her dorm mate talks on the phone constantly. Even if we share a house with 6 other people, we each need a place, be it a bedroom, or a table in the corner of the basement, where no one but us is welcomed.

My daughters each have a table of their own here in the main living area, one on each side of the room. These tables serve as personal storage areas, crafting spaces, and desks all rolled into one. My oldest does not sit at my younger daughters table, and vice versa. I don't sit at either of them. And I leave their stuff alone, because it is theirs to do with what they will...unless there is old food involved, and then my motherly instinct kicks in and I remove it for them. Yes, the tables are usually cluttered, even messy, but as long as every other aspect of the room is clean and in order, I don't mind.

I gave them that space because it's more fun to all be sitting here in the same room together than to be spread out in all corners of the house. I can be on the computer, Zena can be beading, and Ruby can be doing art or workbooks, all at the same time. We each feel like we belong, and we are together, even though we are all doing different things. I like it. It works for us.

More and more people are choosing to purchase recreational vehicles. I've gazed in sheer disbelief at the size and the amenities contained within some of the newer, more expensive RVs. They are truly like mansions on wheels. For the people that can afford these high priced toys, I'm sure that RV storage is a blessing. After all, who would pay a hundred thousand dollars or more for such and elaborate ride and then keep it on the side of their house? When they aren't using it, they are more likely to tuck it neatly away, where they know that it is safe.

There's a big market out there for RV aficionados, from accessorizing, furnishing and detailing, to housing and maintaining them. RVs are big business right now. Though I have never traveled in one, I can imagine how much fun it must be, stopping along the way whenever you feel so inclined. When you're tired, just park it. When you're hungry, whip yourself up some grub. When you want to play a game of cards, or watch a movie, it's all right there. With all of the comforts of home, you would never want to leave it! At some point, however, you would have to go back to work to make the payment....

I love writing for this company. The flexibility that it gives me is perfect for my busy schedule. The money that it brings in is always welcomed and appreciated, and the satisfaction that I receive from being able to be paid to write, well, that makes me truly happy. Finding this little opportunity was a great blessing for me, and it has opened me up to the possibility that maybe I won't work at a casino for the rest of my life. Maybe I do have something interesting to say, or at least I can say it in a mildly entertaining way.

It took me over a month after I mailed in my information to begin blogging. I was reluctant, because I thought that writing about storage solutions all of the time would be tedious, boring and a drain on my energy. I'm happy to say that the opposite has been true for me. I truly enjoy coming up with more creative ways to complete the blogging assignments.

It's fun to sit for a few minutes and conjure up a scenario, bring a character to life in a realistic way and just start clicking away at the keys. These blog entries used to take me over an hour each from start to finish, in the beginning, and they were dry and strained. Now, I can rock one out from beginning to end in less than 30 minutes. Now, that's easy money. And it's fun. Thank you guys for giving me the space to experiment with my writing style.
